Rogers Sings!

This isn’t your normal encouraging story, but it is inspiring.

This guy’s name is Rogers. He is 12 years old and lives in the rural Kenyan village of Kithianio. Like many children in this village, Rogers has no father and his mother is so distracted with the things of this world that she barely cares for him or his siblings. They are very poor and live in a small room behind a shop in the center of the village. Rogers also has type one diabetes.

For most kids in this situation, type one diabetes is a death sentence. But not Rogers. Because he is a student at the Eagles Christian Academy his diabetes was discovered. He gets regular treatment from the local clinic and our yearly medical mission team. But what’s really amazing to me is how he functions daily. As a 12 year old in the Kenyan bush, Rogers checks his own blood sugar, injects his own insulin, and cooks for himself so he can eat regularly.

When I was there, a local shop owner called our partner, Monica, to let her know that Rogers had no food. Monica did what she does, she went immediately to her garden and came back with a load of greens. We took her produce and some flour straight to Rogers who then cooked it and fed himself. Rogers is inspiring.

But the first time I saw Rogers that week he was doing something else. He was singing about his faith in front of the whole school. He stepped to the middle of the stage and the most beautiful and confident voice rang out. Rogers is resilient. He is determined. And he is full of faith. A sweet little boy with a smile that lights up your heart. He is inspiring.

When the Body of Christ comes together, we can do much more than educate, feed, and clothe vulnerable children. We can see lives transformed through love of Christ. We can see thriving where there was once desperation. But we have to do it together. Join us and together we can Be the Answer for vulnerable children and their families around the world. Together, we can see families and communities transformed by the Gospel.
