Beauty in the Midst of Chaos

Saint Hubert’s First Class

What makes this picture so special? It’s not the big smiles on their faces. Haiti is one of those countries that’s not known for smiling in special event pictures. It’s not even the snappy blue outfit. Though I’m very jealous of it. It’s what’s happening in this picture. Saint Hubert (of snappy blue suit fame) is a graduate of our school in Mare Rouge, Haiti and this is the graduating class of HIS trade school. Yes, HIS trade school.

Saint Hubert grew up as one of five children in a very poor family. They could not afford for him to go high school where they lived but he had an older sister who lived near HOB partner School, The Human Care School (HCS). St. Hubert was accepted into HCS in seventh grade and moved in with his sister so he could attend. He grew in the Lord while at HCS and even preached in chapel services. After graduating in 2016 he received an Upward Scholarship from HOB and studied masonry and tiling at a nearby trade School.

When he had difficulty finding work in Mare Rouge, he journeyed to a larger town nearby and opened a trade school. Now, Saint Hubert is teaching others his trade and making a good living for himself. He serves as a deacon at his church and preaches regularly. When I spoke to him, he expressed his gratitude for the education God provided him through HCS, the challenge he received to grow in the Lord, the chances to preach and serve the Lord, and the opportunity to learn a trade.

This is why Heart of the Bride exists. We bring the Body of Christ together so that vulnerable children like St. Hubert don’t fall through the cracks. St. Hubert’s family could not afford his education and he had no other way to reverse the cycle. But, because the Body of Christ was there, his life and the life of all of his students have been changed!
